How to #Hashtag Records in Salesforce

How to #Hashtag Records in Salesforce

#Hashtags are used to organize records around a common theme. For example, I use hashtag to tweet about all the new features and functionalities in a Salesforce Release ( e.g. #SalesforceWinter20).

You can also use #hashtag in Salesforce with chatter posts and records. Let’s say that you want to capture the hobbies/interests (like ‘Golf’, ‘Soccer’, ‘Investment’, ‘Philanthropy’ etc) of your of leads and contacts. One way to capture this information is to use picklist or multi-select picklist field, which an admin will need to create and maintain. But an easier and better way to capture this information will be to use #hashtags. You can use as many hashtags as you want on a record and then search for information based on that.

Introducing Salesforce Topics

Hashtags are implemented with a feature called ‘Topics’ in Salesforce. Topics feature has been there in Salesforce for a while but now but with Winter ’20 release, Salesforce has made an awesome update to the feature for Lightning Experience. Now you can search & view records by its Topics just like you click on a Hashtag on Twitter to see all the posts that contain those hashtags. That’s super cool isn’t it?

In this blog post, I will show step-by-step how to enable, configure, use and search topics in less than 10 minutes. It’s as simple as walk in the park.

(For this blog post, we have set it up in Winter 20 pre-release trial org which is available for signup here https://www.salesforce.com/form/signup/prerelease-winter20/)

I know you are eagerly waiting to see it yourself so here’s what we will be taking you through in this guide:

  • Enable Topics for Objects
  • Add Topics Component to Object Page
  • Add Topics to a Record
  • Search Records by Topic

I’m sure you will fall in love with this feature and make optimal use of it. Use Topics in abundance to make it easy to organize and view records around a common theme. Happy #hash-tagging or shall I say Topic-ing  🙂
