Not only will this create the custom metadata but will also populate it with records from the custom object. This is possible using Salesforce CLI Plugin for Custom Metadata Types introduced in Winter ’21 release.
sfdx force:cmdt:generate -n MyCustomMetadata -s MyCustomObject__c
