Step By Step Guide to Integrating Slack with Salesforce

Integrating Slack with Salesforce

Salesforce acquired Slack in December 2020 in what is touted to be the biggest acquisition in the software industry till date with the valuation of US$ 27.7 Billion.

Slack is a collaboration and instant messaging tool (i.e. an enterprise communication platform). It will fall in the category of products like Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts Chat, Cisco Jabber, Workplace by Facebook and others. If you haven’t had a chance to look at Slack yet, here is an introductory video (2:33 minutes).

What is interesting about Slack is that it is not just for human-to-human communication. Your systems/applications can also send you messages on Slack and you can respond to those messages from Slack, thereby avoiding the need to swivel chair between applications. Slack can become your one-stop-shop for all work communications whether from human or from system.

With 2,200 applications available for integration in Slack App Directory, you can well imagine the wideness of coverage. Not many products in this space can boast of a portfolio like that. These applications include Salesforce (of course), Google Suite of products, Office 365, Twitter, JIRA, Workday, Box and many more.

And now with Salesforce’s acquisition of Slack, I am expecting it to have an even tighter & seamless integration with Salesforce in coming months. Also, how Slack will co-exist with Chatter will be another interesting area to watch.

So keeping an eye on the future, I think it will be worthwhile to explore the Salesforce – Slack integration and how we can use this combination to enhance our users’ experience.

In this blog post, we will take a look at how to integrate Slack with Salesforce, based on what is available today and all the things we can do through this integration. This includes

  • Search & share Salesforce records in Slack
  • Collaborate with team members
  • Get alerts in Slack for record changes in Salesforce
  • Update Salesforce records from Slack
  • Add slack conversation to a Salesforce record
  • Send Salesforce record to Slack

But that is not all. We are going to start from scratch and within the next 30 – 45 mins, learn how to:

  • Register for Slack
  • Create a Channel
  • Install Slack in Salesforce from AppExchange
  • Add Salesforce in Slack from Slack Directory
  • Assign Permission to Users
  • Configure Slack Settings
  • Work in Slack and Salesforce
  • Automate Slack Messages Using Process Builder

(Slack is available in freemium subscription model which means it has a free account with certain features and a paid account with elaborate features. The Salesforce Slack integration shown in this guide works with the free subscription of Slack)
